Last week DRONI’s volunteer Johanna conducted a workshop on intercultural communication, its importance and how to foster it. We learned a lot and were a great group as we were from 4 different nations.
At the beginning we drew a character card and started introducing each other according to our new traits e.g. being very reserved or extroverted etc. We continued with a dice game where the groups changed after every round and new rules had to be adapted. This lead to much confusion which is exactly the purpose of the game to demonstrate the importance of being understanding of other people’s backgrounds. This game was very eye-opening about recognizing miscommunication. With this mindset we went into groups to discuss factors that potentially improve intercultural communication and factors that are hindering it and compared them all together. For example did we all agree that being open minded is essential for successful intercultural communication while a language barrier is an obstacle. We had a great time and left the workshop smarter.
