Last week our member Chabuka gave us the great opportunity to extend our photography knowledge and discuss our portfolio in his workshop
In the beginning he introduced us to the photo agency Magnum Photos. It is a cooperative owned by its members and with offices around the world. We had a look at famous pictures from them. We put special focus on how Georgia was portrayed by Magnum Photos back in the 90s. It challenged our knowledge about the country when guessing the places of the pictures.
After analyzing multiple pictures from Abkhazia we continued with challenging our own creativity. Chabuka gave us many prints of his own work with the task, in two teams, to choose some of them and put them in a certain order that tells a story. Everyone got very invested and the stories that we created were quite different. It was not as easy as expected and emphasized how the message of a picture varies based on how it’s composed.
Two of the participants had already had experience with photography. They shared their portfolio and together we discussed their work and Chabuka was able to give feedback.
Overall this workshop very much re-sparked my interest in photography and motivated me to lay more focus on the composition when taking pictures.
